As all die hard WIRE fans are well aware, there is only a little over a week before Michael Kenneth Williams returns to the small screen in HBO’s new highly anticipated, star-studded, prohibition-era series, Boardwalk Empire starring Steve Buscemi. In Boardwalk, Williams, the skilled actor who played “Omar” on the WIRE, plays Chalky White, “the de facto Mayor of Atlantic City’s African-American community” in 1920s Atlantic City, at the moment alcohol is declared illegal and the US is on the cusp of huge economic and cultural change. With Sopranos writer Terence Winter writing and Martin Scorsese directing the pilot, Boardwalk has been set up to be HBO’s heaviest-hitting drama since the WIRE and the Sopranos. And for some, it will simply be a way to reunite with Michael Kenneth Williams.
