Michael Kenneth Williams takes New York City

As giraffe-like models swarmed the streets of New York City on Friday night for Fashion’s Night Out, Baltimore was part of the action.  As the Brew reported last week, Michael Kenneth Williams, the talented rookie dancer-cum-actor who played the WIRE’s “Omar Little” – a shotgun-toting drug dealer with a solid albeit unconventional moral code – will soon appear on HBO again in the new Terrence Winter/Martin Scorcese-steered Prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire as the gangster “Chalky White.”

Though Boardwalk is set in Atlantic City and Williams hails from Brooklyn, the arguable cult-status of Omar among WIRE fans undeniably grants him honorary Baltimorean status.  As part of Fashion’s Night Out, Williams attended a Boardwalk Empire event at Bloomingdale’s in midtown Manhattan along with fellow cast members and the model Veronica Webb.

Inside the department store, DJs blasted techno music, models in skintight dresses ballroom-danced through Lancome, shoppers waited 30 minutes to buy mascara and waiters circulated trays of pink champagne.  Outside, Williams and other cast members milled around a miniature Boardwalk Empire set complete with an artificial boardwalk and live 1920s-themed window displays Bloomingdale’s had set up for the event.  The Brew was there to capture the honorary Baltimorean, who posed for photographers from US Weekly, the Brew, and a Japanese television station, among others.

As photogs snapped shots along with curious tourists, people on the street shouted “Omar! Omar!”  One fan was so determined to get the actor’s attention that he got off his bike in the middle of 3rd Avenue and yelled the character’s name over and over again until Williams heard him and both men laughed and pointed at each other.
