Student photographers shoot a beautiful day in West Baltimore

For March, it was a weirdly wonderfully warm day in Baltimore, a great day to do pretty much anything outside.

For Jon Fried’s Advanced Placement photography class from Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts, it was perfect for the task at hand – practicing the art of shooting portraits.

“How else should I shoot it?” student Kyrell McDowell asked his teacher, who is technically an “educational associate” at the West Baltimore school.

“You could get down on the ground and shoot up,” Fried suggested. With temperatures in the high 70s today and the cement plaza at Harlem Park where they were shooting relatively clean and dry in the hot sun, McDowell had no problem sprawling on his back and angling his camera up.

“Try different angles, different backgrounds,” Fried told them. “Just keep shooting!”

Joining the students on this en plein air photo-shoot was the video teacher at Augusta Fells, Chip Dizard, a videoblogger and sometime Brew contributor.

The students have been making lots of photographs of the neighborhood around their school, part of a project they’re calling “The Air We Breathe.”

They’re going to be hanging the photographs in the school in the coming days – and, we hope, sending us a photo gallery we’ll bring to you on The Brew.

The seniors in the class also will be busy making portfolios that could allow them to count their high school project, Fried said proudly, toward college credit.
