Scene in the city: stilt walkers

The scene: Golden sunset light washes over the lush green grass and gorgeous landscaping at Cylburn Arboretum. (This was Wednesday.) About two dozen adults and kids are out there with stilts strapped to their feet, some of them tottering around, guided by spotters, others waiting to go.

The story: It’s a free all-ages stilt-walking workshop, put on by Nana Projects, supported by the Parks & People Foundation and the Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks. The non-profit Nana Projects is “a company of visual alchemists inventing innovative artwork that draws people together in public spaces.” Think crazy characters at the annual Lantern Parade at Patterson Park.

The cool part: We liked the surreal juxtaposition of stick-legged humans looking like they were trying out for Cirque du Soleil out in front of the genteel 124-year-old Cylburn Mansion with its Italiante cupola and gracious porch, built back in the days of croquet and lawn tennis.

Nana folks talk about their campaign to teach 1,000 Baltimoreans to stiltwalk and how the process of learning is an interesting exercise in conquering fear. (Wouldn’t falling, ahem, hurt? Will the satori moment be worth the bruised tailbone? Perhaps I need to sign up for this?)

Beginning stilt walkers definitely need a little a little extra support. (Photo by Fern Shen)

More info: They’ve got more of these free classes planned, at Herring Run on Sept. 30, 1-3 p.m. and Roosevelt Park in Hampden, Oct. 10, 1-3 p.m. and Gwynn’s Falls Park, Oct. 14, 1-3 p.m.

You can go to their website or call 443-919-6980 for more info.

Cylburn has all kinds of interesting programming, beyond its excellent plant, critter and gardening-related features.

There is, for example, a Fall Chamber Music Series. The next installment is at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 – “An Evening of Spanish Songs,” with mezzo soprano Monica Szabo-Nyeste and pianist Eva Mengelkoch.
