[...] The lunch menu didn’t look bad either, and although I haven’t actually had a school lunch, I was impressed. Asian stir-fry with snow peas? Fresh fruit? Side Salads? That to me was fantastic compared to my memories of mystery meat and mashed potatoes– and really actually reassuring to me that my kids would be okay with school provided lunch. (Although, I did love my french fries with gravy as a kid.) And hold on– they use local produce and Baltimore City has their own 33-acre farm to help provide the school system with an educational mean...?
This is GREAT! Urban farming is a wonderful thing. Since most people seem to want McMansions on former farms that were once beautiful and scenic (now we import most goods). Why not have farms in the city? We have well attended farmer's markets, aspiriing food co-ops etc...

Since we are so bent on suburban living, why not? Every year we say there are not enough jobs for youth and city residents, why not tear down the 20,000 units the city owns and create gardens?

The local media is so skewed on crime right now in the city and economists are predicting another middleclass exodous, and MD is in second freeway building freenzy, we need someone to talk about what happens when the city is dead and left for the few, willing and underclasses.

What do we do? Every year MD has to import workers to do farm labor while this could be a good experience for urban youth.

I still believe you tell the health of a nation by its urban core.

This is awesome, we need more kids getting in touch with how food is produced. Back yard gardening, farmers markets, hell, cooking classes. I mean seriously, how is what students learn in biology more important than learning to feed themselves? I would argue that a lack of knowledge of cooking is central to why so many people rely on cheap fast food products that don't provide any nutrition.
