City Paper loses “Crazy John” defamation suit
A U.S. District Court jury in Baltimore found City Paper, and senior staff writer Van Smith, guilty of defamation Thursday, saying a 2008 story published by the alternative weekly mistakenly described a Miami man as a federal fugitive, the Maryland Daily Record reports today.
The case involved an article about a raid of six Baltimore properties associated with Milton Tillman Jr.
According to Baltimore Magazine‘s new media blog, the owner of one of those properties, Iannnis “Crazy John” Kafouros, was thought to have skipped town a decade ago to avoid theft charges. Smith mistakenly identified him as a Miami restaurateur by the same name.
The paper was ordered to pay $350,000 in damages, according to the magazine. They quoted City Paper publisher Don Farley saying he wasn’t sure if they would appeal the decision.
