Workers from Baltimore’s ESPN Zone sue the Disney-owned company
Former ESPN Zone workers staged a demonstration today at the Power Plant Live complex at the Inner Harbor, as they filed a federal lawsuit charging that the company should have given them more warning before shutting down in June and leaving them jobless, Maryland Legal Aid reports.
The class action suit contends that the company’s action violated the federal WARN act and that the Disney-owned company should have given employes earlier notice before shutting down. ESPN has previously said they follow all federal regulations.
Maryland Legal Aid represents United Workers, a human rights organization led by low-wage workers that is organizing the ESPN Zone employees and has staged previous demonstrations at the Inner Harbor, as the Brew has previously reported.
Videographer Bill Hughes recorded today’s action in the following video, which includes comments from laid-off ESPN Zone workers.
“We felt like we were disposable cups, thrown out when we were no longer needed,” said the unidentified worker. “I found out through Facebook.”
Disney or ESPN Zone has not yet responded to today’s demonstration.
