American Visionary Art Museum, Race Pace Bicycles, Bikemore and Baltimore Bike Party are teaming up to host a combo bike trip and bike-themed movie tomorrow evening (August 9) in South Baltimore.
“The Grand Pre-Flicks: Tour de Federal Hill Redux” – a free event – will offer a mix of celluloid and exercise to “open eyes” to the visual arts and cycling communities in Baltimore, says Nick Prevas, a spokesman for AVAM.
The nine-mile pedal around the South Baltimore peninsula will begin at the Race Pace Bicycle Shop, 1410 Key Highway, at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Race Pace will provide some rental bikes to those without wheels, said manager Paul Cavalieri. Call ahead (410-986-0001) to reserve.
Finishing at AVAM about 8 p.m., bikers can view free of charge the museum’s current exhibit, “All Things Round: Galaxies, Eyeballs and Karma,” before heading off for the 9 p.m. showing of the acclaimed animated comedy, “The Triplets of Belleville,” at the Hughes Family Outdoor Theater.
Bikemore will provide “bike valet” service between the museum and outdoor theater, with proceeds going to support its work and Baltimore Bike Party.
Chris Merriam, who helped found Bikemore in March, said the collaboration between the bike groups and AVAM began last month when they hosted a similar bike trip (interrupted by a sudden thunderstorm) before the screening of “Breaking Away,” a film about an Indiana teenager obsessed with Italian cycling.
“We are helping AVAM by getting more people to their events while promoting biking,” Merriam said, noting that his group has more than 300 users on Facebook and 260 followers on Twitter.
“We have the ability to get the word out to other riders and large numbers of people,” said Tim Barnett, a leader of Bike Party. “If there is another opportunity to promote biking, we are totally on board for that.”
