Silent films made in Baltimore from the ’20s and ’30s with a twist
They’re set to the music of Wye Oak, Dan Deacon and other contemporary locals
Imagine a 1938 silent film: “Behind the Scenes at Hutzler’s” made to promote the legendary downtown department store. Now picture it set to Dan Deacon’s music.
Likewise picture a film called “Druid Hill Park Zoo” made in 1927, which is crazy enough. Now imagine it with musical stylings by, appropriately, the group “Among Wolves.”
You can experience these and other weird sound-sight, past-present amalgams on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Maryland Historical Society. Joe Tropea just sent out an email with the details on this free event, “Maryland on Film.” (It’s part of Free Fall Baltimore.)
Here’s what Joe said:
We’ll be showing eight films from the MdHS collections in two programs that will repeat throughout the day (10am-5pm). Six of the films are silent, so we thought it’d be fun to pair them with music from some of the best bands and musicians currently residing in Baltimore, Md.
These archival films are ripe for documentary makers and filmmakers of all types to discover and use — with permission naturally. Please come discover them.
