500 calls about water breaks in city during the cold spell

Since the cold snap arrived in Baltimore on Monday evening, city crews have responded to about 500 calls of burst pipes and no water service, Jeffrey Raymond, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works, said today.

Most of the breaks involve service lines that run from the meter to the customer, “but we still have to check them out and turn off the water to prevent flooding,” Raymond said.

There have been some water main breaks – none of them seriously impacting a part of the city.

Among them at 500 S. Broadway in Fells Point; 1700 E. Patapsco Street in South Baltimore; Lombard Street near South Street downtown; Holabird Avenue near Poncabird; and North Avenue between Fulton Avenue and Monroe Street.

DPW urges residents to protect their pipes in extreme cold weather by leaving a thin stream of water running from indoor faucets to prevent freezing, turning off water to outdoor spigots and draining the water from the spigot, and insulating pipes in unheated parts of the house.
