A beefed-up network of security cameras have been placed in all 107 Baltimore County elementary schools, allowing police to immediately connect with the network offsite.
The $3.7 million “One View” system was demonstrated today by County Executive Kevin B. Kamenetz, with live video feeds from two elementary schools displayed at the police command and control center.
Under the new system, police can access the camera feeds from their patrol cars and precincts as well as from mobile devices that have secure network access.
The system, which includes at least three cameras per school, was approved soon after a 15-year-old shot and wounded a 17-year-old at Perry Hall High School in 2012. The county’s middle and high schools already have installed security cameras.
In addition to the new cameras, the system includes door locks, card readers and a central I.D. checking application.
One million dollars of the funding came from fines collected from speed cameras and the remaining $2.7 million was county-funded.
