New carpeting is coming to Baltimore City Hall, including for the offices of four of the five members of the Board of Estimates who are expected to approve the expenditure at their Wednesday meeting.

The carpet replacement will cost $750,000 and be taken out of the capital construction and maintenance reserve, according to the spending board’s agenda released this afternoon.

The Department of General Services, which will perform the work, says most of the office areas in the building have carpeting that has reached the end of its useful life.

In more heavily trafficked areas, the carpeting has “experienced staining and severe wear and tear which creates tripping hazards,” according to the agency.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the board will be asked to approve funds to install new carpeting on all six floors and associated costs. This will include the removal of existing carpeting, carpet tiles and “waste disposal in accordance with local and federal codes.”

In addition, new vinyl strips will be installed at the base of office walls.

City Hall was fully rehabilitated at a cost of $10.5 million in 1973-75. In recent years, the city has spent $483,000 to re-point the exterior stonework and another $200,000 to install new sidewalks around the building.
