City hiring students to shovel snow for seniors

Monday (tomorrow) deadline for youth job that could pay $500 or more

Would-be participants may have missed it when the program was announced in July – who thinks about snow when it’s sweltering? – but senior citizens and persons with disabilities can sign up  to receive assistance from a Baltimore student who will help them shovel snow off their sidewalk.

For students ages 14-21 who are willing to shoulder a shovel and put in some effort, it’s also a good opportunity – the City Youth Snow Program will pay $500 or more.

UPDATE: The two numbers circulating for students to call for this program – 443-263-2220 and 443-984-4095 – just go to a recorded voice saying “you have reached the City of Baltimore’s voice messaging system.” A 311 operator this morning said they will take students’ information over the phone “since this is the last day.” She said calls will be accepted until 10 p.m.

Community associations this weekend are circulating details of the new initiative, administered by the city Department of Transportation, because the deadline for students is tomorrow, Monday, November 2.

For those who want to receive the shoveling help, the deadline to sign up is November 15.

Senior citizens must show photo identification to verify they are age 65 or older (a copy of your driver’s license, will do) and others, in addition to photo ID, must send documentation of their disability or medical condition.

The service is based on DOT having enough students to do the work, so completing the registration form does not guarantee receiving the assistance, a release from the city notes. Another limitation is that the student shovelers can’t remove snow from steps – just from the public right-of-way.

Students can sign up by emailing jobs.trans@baltimorecity.gov or by calling 443-984-4095.

Phoning is best since the deadline is so near. There’s a lot of documentation required, including three references.

ALSO: It looks like there’s no place online to download the application forms, so again you need to make the phone call.
