A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed by police after a more than five-hour standoff yesterday that unfolded after officers tried to serve warrants on her and another man at a Randallstown apartment, Baltimore County police said.
The woman was identified as Korryn Gaines. A five-year-old who police say was with Gaines during the standoff was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, police said.
Police said yesterday they had not confirmed whether the child was Gaines’ son. A family member has said that he was. Police said they have also not confirmed whether police officers, or Gaines, shot the child.
According to police, “several warrant squad members and a uniformed officer” came to the apartment on the unit block of Sulky Court at about 9:20 am to serve a warrant on Gaines for failure to appear in connection with a March incident in which she was charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and several traffic violations.
After no one answered the door, police obtained a key from the building’s landlord, entered the home and saw Gaines sitting on the floor with a gun, according to Police Chief Jim Johnson.
“The officers determined that the female was wielding around with a shotgun, pointed it at one of the three officers,” Johnson said yesterday, addressing the media. “At that time she had the five-year-old in her arms as well, seated on the floor.”
Johnson said Gaines repeatedly pointed the gun at officers during hours of negotiations and at about 3 pm, told the officers if they didn’t leave “she would kill them.”
“We discharged one round at her, in turn she fired several rounds back at us,” Johnson said. “We fired again at her, striking her and killing her,” he said.
Baltimore County Police officials have not yet released the names of the officers. Police have also not identified a man they said was in the apartment who fled with a one-year-old child but was later caught.
