Do you overdo it with your kid’s sports activities?

Then you should read the new book by Baltimore author and Brew contributor Mark Hyman about young people and sports injuries.

“Until it Hurts” will strike a chord with many parents. That’s true largely because Hyman is brutally honest about his own responsibility for his son’s elbow problems and subsequent surgery at age 18.

In a recent New York Times article, for instance, he recalls how, three days after a school athletic trainer told him his son should see an orthopedic trainer, he had him on the mound, encouraging him to pitch the team into the playoffs.

There’s also a fascinating section on Michael Phelps’ older sister Whitney Phelps, a swimming star in her own right who recalls being in so much pain she had difficulty standing at the age of 12.

Hyman has also written essays about the subject in Sports Illustrated.

Hyman will be speaking Saturday, May 9th at 2 p.m. at the Roland Park branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
