Will Phelps fix Baltimore kids’ pools, as well as their strokes?
Tomorrow, he’s announcing a partnership with city schools to help summer school students learn to swim.
Above: Buff AND benevolent….?
Michael Phelps will be getting his feet wet in different waters tomorrow, as he announces a partnership to give swimming lessons to 60 Baltimore City Public School students.
Phelps will be at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute to announce the program, which teams up the schools’ Summer Learning Academy for middle school students with the Michael Phelps Swim School. The program provides 60 students with up to 20 hours of swim lessons, donated by the coaches from Phelps’ Swim School, with one instructor to be made available for every six students.
Details are sketchy yet, but one question for Phelps and the schools: will the partnership address other deeper, on-going issues, such as the serious need for renovation of the school systems’ pools?
Poly’s pool, where the lessons will take place, is in serious need of renovations; two winters ago the swim team was forced to practice at a public pool due to maintenance problems. The Baltimore City College swim team was similarly forced to give up swimming half way through the season as the high school’s pool was plagued by problem after problem, from mold to draining issues.
The Brew brought this up last year, suggesting that the multi-millionaire from Rodgers Forge might help the city school kids out AND buff up his toke-tarnished image at the same time.
Perhaps the partnership is meant to evolve in this direction. . . .?
