The Washington Monument lights up!

Above: The crowd of holiday revelers looks on as fireworks lit up the Washington Monument in celebration of the monument’s lighting.

Baltimore’s lack of a Christmas tree is more than made up for by the annual celebration surrounding the ceremonial lighting of the Washington Monument in Mt. Vernon. The fireworks-filled affair went off without a hitch last night, as thousands converged upon Mt. Vernon to witness the spectacle.

The monument square was already too overwhelmed with holiday revelers for this reporter to get close to the main stage where most of the formal song and dance was being performed. But the eastern corner of the square allowed for a spectacular view of the fireworks along with a chance to listen to impromptu caroling.

Peabody students sang choral renditions of holiday favorites including “O, Christmas Tree,” and “Silent Night” which I managed to record. Listen below!
