More about Baltimore’s plan to privatize youth rec centers
Here is a podcast of today’s interview by WYPR’s Sheilah Kast on “Maryland Morning” with Mark Reutter concerning The Brew’s coverage of the city’s plan to spin off as many as 25 recreation centers to private management, including neighborhood groups and the city school system.
The plan has sparked concern that some rec centers will be closed and resulted in a “save our rec center” demonstration in Hampden last week. The city has put out bids for all 55 rec centers, with proposals due from interested parties later this week.
The push to privatize the centers has come on the heels of a mayor’s task force report that called on expanding and modernizing some rec centers and spinning off or closing others. More details here.
