Record-breaking sugar ship departs Baltimore

Above: Bulk carrier “Simon Schulte” passes Silo Point this afternoon.

We caught up with “Simon Schulte,” the largest bulk carrier ever to enter Baltimore’s upper harbor, as it left the city today on its return voyage to Central America.

The vessel was a sight to behold in the late afternoon sun.

Measuring 622 feet long and 100 feet wide, with four burly cargo booms poking the sky, it glided imperiously past the Silo Point condo building, piloted by a Moran tug, in gently choppy waters.

This followed the boat’s 15-day stay at the Domino Sugar Plant in South Baltimore, disgorging 95 million pounds of raw sugar from Guatemala, the largest single shipment of sugar to any U.S. port east of New Orleans.

With its iconic neon sign, the Domino plant is the last factory that depends on water transportation in the upper reaches of Baltimore Harbor.

Despite its age – it’s a month away from celebrating its 90th anniversary – the Domino factory is considered one of the most efficient sugar refineries in the U.S.

For port aficionados, here’s another shot of the departing ship.
