In an interview on WYPR’s Midday show yesterday, Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby was asked to comment on the $45,000 federal IRS lien against him and his wife, State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby.
In October, Mosby had acknowledged the lien to the Baltimore Sun and, the following month, to The Brew and to other media as well.
So host Tom Hall was taken aback when Mosby proclaimed, “There was never a lien on my property.” He then repeated the claim several times.
Later in the interview, Hall informed Mosby that Sun reporter Justin Fenton had just tweeted a copy of the lien.
“Let me ask you to respond,” said Hall.
There was an 11 second silence.
“Mr. Council President, can you hear me?” Hall asked, interrupting the dead air.
Explaining the apparent direct contradiction, Mosby told Hall at one point that the document that Fenton tweeted is not a lien.
“He has a copy of the notice of the tax lien,” Mosby said.
Mosby then appeared to acknowledge having a lien, but said, “It’s not a lien on my property. I don’t have a property lien.”
At points during the interview, Mosby talked about making installment payments. “I did owe taxes like millions of Americans.”

Saying he was now looking at the lien document online, Mosby added, “This is the first time I’m seeing it.”
HALL: “So you’ve never seen this?”
MOSBY: “If you go on public records it’s not there, if you go and request it from–”
HALL: “They did not mail this to you? You did not receive this from the federal government?”
MOSBY: “No, I haven’t seen it.”
