Misdemeanor charges were filed against a Baltimore Sun editor who was fired a week earlier.

The charges were made in district court by a Sun reporter, who says she was assaulted by Riley Gutiérrez McDermid, assistant managing editor for news, at McDermid’s Station North apartment on March 1.

On March 15, McDermid was charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree sexual contact, according to an online court filing. She is scheduled to appear at Eastside District Court on April 30.

According to three sources, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the charges, McDermid had invited two Sun reporters to her rowhouse on March 1 in anticipation of the three going to “a rave.”

There was reported drinking at the apartment before the alleged assault took place.

The incident was conveyed to Sun management by a reporter. An internal investigation was conducted that led to the editor’s dismissal on or about March 7.

The Brew is not identifying the victim of the alleged assault.

McDermid, who could not be reached for comment, filed assault and sexual contact charges of her own against a Sun reporter on March 6. A court hearing is scheduled for April 18.

Hired in September

McDermid was hired last September to lead the Sun’s daily news coverage.

Her job would focus on emerging news, “finding the stories we shouldn’t miss and making sure the stories we’re working on answer the questions our readers have,” according to a September 10 memo by Managing Editor Tricia Bishop.

“Riley is a proud member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and of Investigative Reporters and Editors. Her hobbies include beekeeping, talking about political and pop culture trivia and throwing fancy dinner parties,” Bishop added.

While living with her family in California, McDermid served nearly two years as an associate editor at The Hill in Washington, leading the finance, business and tech teams.

Prior to that, according to her LinkedIn resume, she worked as the money and tech editor at USA Today, was a regional investigative editor for McClatchy Media and was a digital producer for the San Francisco Business Times.

She also said she had edited or reported for a wide range of publications, including the Financial Times, MarketWatch and Wall Street Journal.

Bishop and Sun publisher/editor-in-chief Trif Alatzas did not respond to questions about her dismissal or her resume.

She occasionally wrote articles for The Sun, most recently about Luigi Mangione and cryptocurrency. Her bylines have since been scrubbed from the paper’s online site.
